MIRPUR: The members of the Legislative Assembly and the Kashmir Council, the two houses of the Kashmiri Parliament, would elect the new president of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) on August 15 for the next five years.
The stipulated constitutional term of President Sardar Muhammad Yaqoob Khan would end on August 24 this year. Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Justice Ghulam Mustafa Mughal has announced the schedule of the election to the office of the new head of the state.
According to the schedule, nomination papers for office of the president could be filed in the office of the chief election commissioner in his office in Muzaffarabad on August 11 from 10am to 12pm. The scrutiny of the nomination papers would be held on the same day after 12pm. The candidates could withdraw the nomination papers on August 12 by 12pm.
The polling would be held on August 15 between 10am to 3pm at the Lodging Hall of the Legislative Assembly in Muzaffarabad. According to an official notification, Election Commission Secretary Mian Naeemullah will perform as presiding officer in the scheduled election for the president.
The chief election commissioner, under Clause 13 of the AJK Presidential Election Rules, has requested the state president to summon the joint session of both the houses of Kashmiri Parliament, the Kashmir Council and the Legislative Assembly on August 15.
